A stunning aurora borealis was sighted in the Atlanta area around 10:30 PM on May 10, 2024. The aurora, caused by a severe geomagnetic storm, painted the sky with vibrant colors.
The flare that triggered the storm is the biggest solar flare Earth has experienced in nearly 20 years. The plot on this page shows the most recent 24-hour solar X-ray data from the primary GOES satellite.
The geomagnetic storm is expected to continue for several hours. With the current speed, it will take the solar wind 60 minutes to propagate from DSCOVR to Earth.
